Yellow Jackets Rout Eustis Panthers 27-7

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Friday, November 25, 1960

Halfback David Webster stole the show at Memorial Field Wednesday night as the fightin Jackets of
Leesburg High took the measure of their cross county rivals Eustis to the tune of 27 to 7. In addition to
scoring on a seventy five yard kickoff return and a fourteen yard jaunt up the middle the speedy Senior
letterman set up the second TD witH a pass interception and the final score with a forty three yard
sprint.

Eustis drew first blood early in the game as they picked up a Leesburg fumble and connected on a
thirty
seven yard pass play to give them a first and goal on the one yard line. Quarterback Richard Davis
lugged it over for the six points and a Mike Martin pass End Ken Fisher was good for the point after but
this ended the scoring for the night as far as the Panthers were concerned.

Leesburg retaliated with a kickoff return for the six points that went seventy five yards. David Webster
got
his team even in the TD column with this one and Quarterback Randy Brown brought them even on the
score board with a place kick.

In the second period it was Webster once again. This time he got in front of a Eustis aerial at the
visitors
thirty eight and hauled it back to their ten yard line before he was pulled down. Halfback Bobby Lowery
racked up the six points with a one yard plunge and the twin elevens left the field at halftime with
Leesburg leading 13 to 7.

The Panthers had the edge in statistics for the first half with 3 first downs to two for Leesburg while
rolling
up a total offense of seventy eight yards to a mere forty nine for the host Jackets.

The Orange and Black of Leesburg High came out loaded for bear in the second half though as they
marched on a sustained drive from their own three yard line with five consecutive first downs to the
visitors fourteen. Halfback Webster squirmed up the middle for th TD and Handy Randy split the
uprights
with his place kick to put the Jackets out of reach.

In the fourth quarter the Whitye Smith coached crew started a drive from their own thirty that was
climaxed
when Randy Brown lugged it over from nine yards out. Halfback Webster set this one up with a forty
three
yard sprint only to be pulled down on the five yard line.

The thirty yard line was the closest the visitors could get in the second half as Leesburg controlled the
ball most of the time. The game ended with a Randy Brown aerial being knocked down in the end
zone.

The play had been set up by linebacker Dillard Copeland who had intercepted a Eustis aerial at
midfield
and raced back to the visitors twenty yard line.

This marked the season's final for the two schools with Eustis on the short end of a 3 and 7 record
while
the Jackets came through with one of their best records in years a 6-3-1 to share the runner up spot
with
Sanford in the Orange Belt Conference.

Next week the fightin Jackets will write finish to football for another year when they take on the tough
Tavares Bulldogs at Memorial Field. This ninth annual classic is scheduled for Friday the second with
all
proceeds going to the Harry Anna Crippled Childrens Home.
