Leesburg Host To Eustis In Season Finale

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Wednesday, November 23, 1960

The fightin' Jackets of Leesburg High will close out their regular season at Memorial Field tonight
where they will play host to their cross County rivals the Panthers of Eustis High. Kickoff is set for eight
as the
Jackets prep for their Elks Bowl appearance on December 2nd against Mid Lakes Conference champ
Tavares.

Eustis and Leesburg have been bitter rivals off and on the gridiron over a period of years and local fans
have seen some of the best games in the history of the two schools. Eustis last won in 1957 when they
took the Jackets to the tune of 30 to 12. In 1958 and 1959 the Jackets had little trouble disposing of the
Panthers 35 to 6 and 33 to 0. This has been a year of rebuilding for Head Coach Tommy Owens and
his
Panthers and they go into the game tonight with a three and six record. It is expected to be a no hods
barred contest as the Gold and Blue of Eustis High throws caution to the wind with a wide open type
offense.

The Jacket are geared to expect most anything in the way of an offense as the Panthers have enjoyed a
week and half of rest while getting ready for this one while Leesburg absorbed a 14 to 0 pounding from
Haines City last week. Head Coach Whitey Smith has guided his team well all year long and comes
into
the season' finale with one of the best records at Leesburg High in some years. AT the present writing
Quarterback Randy Brown continues to be the only doubtful starter for the Jackets while Halfback Doug
Mumford with a broken hand picked up in the Haines City game is definitely out for the rest of the year.

Max Wettstein and Jon Axford are expected to be at the end spots in the starting eleven with Hunt
Paulling
and Tom Willis the starting tackles. Robert Mock and Charles Sellers will be in at the guard posts with
Willie McCallum over the ball at Center.

Alternating backfields have been working out all week long for the Jackets with the Orange Unit of
quarterback John Gray, Halfbacks David Webster and Bobby Lowery and Fullback Roger Clark being
crowded for the starting nod by the Black Unit of Quarterback Ronnie Young, Halfbacks Stand Gideons
and Arthur Spence with David Herlong and Dickie Huff alternating at fullback.
