Jackets End Season With 33-0 Victory Over Eustis

The Leesburg Yellow Jackets playing without the services of fullback Roger Clark, dampened
Homecoming for Eustis with a 33 to 0 win over the Panthers here Friday night.
In running up their one-sided win each of the Jacket backs had a hand in the scoring with Co-Capt
Bates racking up two on a four yard run and a one yard plunge, senior quarterback John Ward
registering his six pointer on a ten-yard keeper play, halfback Randy Brown crossing the double stripe
a six yard run, and fullback David Herlong going all the way from 35 yards out on the draw play. The
Jackets opened the scoring the minute they got their hands on the ball with a sustained drive from their
own 22. After four consecutive first downs, they had a first and goal on the Eustis 10. Three plays later
halfback Lynn Bates chalked up his first six points for the night. Randy Brown with a 44 yard gallop ate
a big chunk of real estate in this drive.
As the first period drew to a close the Jackets were on the move once more, the drive stating again
their own 22. Their drive was stalled momentarily when the teams exchanged fumbles at the Eustis 40
gathered momentum. Five first downs and they had a first and goal once more on the Panther 10. Two
plays later halfback Randy Brown went over for the six points.
Eustis was unable to move the ball following the kick off and were forced to punt. The kick was partially
blocked and the Jackets had a first and 10 on the Panthers 47. A combination running and passing
gave them a first and goal on the 10 yard line for the third time in a row. This time quarterback Johnny
Ward rolled out and worked the keeper play to perfection to cross the double stripe standing up.
With the following kickoff the Panthers offensive unit was kicked into gear and moved the ball well.

halfback Byron Dean had a first and 10 on the Jackets 20. The Jackets defensive unit rose to the
occasion however and plucked a Eustis aerial out of the air at their own three. The halftime came with
Leesburg in front, 20 to 0.
Neither team was able to muster up a drive and exchanged punts for most of the third period. Two
drive started as the third period came to an end and started from their own 31. Randy Brown chipped
26 yard jaunt to give them a first down on the hosts' 40. Another first down and they were at the 24. This
time Brown responded with a 22 yard swivel down two yards shy of pay dirt. Halfback Lynn Bates
the six points two plays later.
This Jackets closed out their scoring for the night with a sustained drive from their won 40. Halfback
Brown once more gave them a big push with a 23 yard sprint weaving in and out through a host of

The defensive unit which had hogged the spotlight for most of the second half of the season had to
over to share honors with the offensive eleven Friday night. Racking up 60 points and two wins to close
out their season may be an indication of things to come at Leesburg High. It was the best tonic that
be offered to the squad, the coaching staff, and the faithful followers of football fortunes at Leesburg
Seniors Joe Heath, Chip Bridges, Ken Ferguson, Glenn Tyre, David Robers, Buddy Bruce, Jim
Lynn Bates and Johnny Ward played their final game for the Leesburg Yellow Jackets Friday night. Key
men in their defensive unit were end Gerald Fletcher and middle guard Hunt Paulling.
