Leesburg Yellow Jackets Win Over Eustis Panthers, 35 To 6

Young Credited With 88 Yards In Scoring Spree

By "DES"
The Daily Commercial
Sunday, November 23, 1958

The Leesburg Yellow Jackets could do nothing right at Memorial Field Friday night as
the host Jackets dumped the visiting Panthers to the tune of 35 to 6.

For Leesburg victory number one of the year was sweet as they continued their overall
mastery over
Eustis with nine victories in the past ten years. A tired but happy band of Yellow Jackets
hoisted Coached
Billy Brewer, Buddy Lowe, and Fred McDaniels to their shoulders in a victory parade off
the field at
game's end.

The TD parade started early in the game the first time the Jackets got their hands on
the ball. Sophomore
sensation Randy Brown who did everything right and everything well Friday night stet
them up with a
scintillating twenty seven yard dash for a first down on the visitors five yard line. On the
third play from
scrimmage Brown did the honors carrying over the double stripe from six yards out.

The Panthers took the ensuing kickoff and put the ball in play on their own nine. A
couple of plays later a
vicious tackle by Ken Ferguson of Panther halfback Ron Mulder in the end zone racked
up two more
points on the scoreboard in favor of Leesburg and the handwriting was on the wall for all
to see.

Midway in the second period Halfback Ron Mulder for the visiting Blue and Gold eleven
stepped back to
pass on fourth down from his own thirty yard line and was buried under an avalanche of
Orange and
Black jerseys. The Jackets racked up a first down when Handy Randy went eleven yards
around the left
side on a pitch out from Quarterback John Ward. The play started with an unbalanced
line and Brown
running to the weak side.

The next play was set up the same way only this time Quarterback Ward faked to the
speeding Brown and
sent his fullback Ferrell Young crashing over the right side  for thirteen yards and a first
down on the four.
It wasn't long before Young bounced into the end zone from four yards out.

The first half was drawing to a close when Halfback Ron Mulder took the ensuing kickoff
and was on his
way only to be hauled down at the last minute on the Jackets forty five. Eustis got
themselves three quick
first downs mixing their passing and running attack well. With two seconds showing on
the scoreboard
clock before halftime and from one foot out Fullback Bobby Green crashed over for the
six points.

Eustis roared back in the second half picking up a Leesburg fumbler on the Jackets
thirty four and moving
the ball to the ten yard line before their offense was stopped.

Leesburg moved the ball well but failed to score and the ball changed hands a couple of
times before
Lynn Bates rared up and picked a Eustis aerial out of the air on their twenty nine and
went all the way to
the four before he was hauled down. This time it was John Ward's turn and the
Quarterback went over
standing up from that point as the quarter ended.

In the final period another interception this time by Brown who got in the way of four of
them during the
night, gave the Jackets  the ball on the visitors thirty five. A fifteen yard penalty and the
Jackets had a first
down on the twenty. It only took a couple of plays before Senior letterman Ferrell Young
bounced over
from the eleven yard line.

The scoring ended for the night when the Jackets took the ball on their own forty five
and marched
downfield to the five yard line making full use of their regulars was well as their second
stringers. From
this point Randy Brown who had now moved into the Quarterback slot faded back  ran
first one way and
then another before he finally stopped and fired a bulls eye to Fullback Ferrell Young
for TD No. 5 more
than they have been able to amass all year long.

Offensive stars for the Jackets were their elusive Halfback Randy Brown and Fullback
Ferrell Young.
Young did just about everything expected and took a lot of hard knocks for his efforts
but he kept coming
back for more Brown ran for one TD, passed for another, kicked three extra points and
plucked four
Eustis passes out of the air. Ronnie Gibson was outstanding on defense teaming up
successfully with
Charles Miller, Eddie Fletcher, and Ken Ferguson to bottle up the highly touted 27 lb.
Panther fullback
Bobby Green and their attack.

It was finish for the year for Eustis and the home finale for the Jackets. They travel to the
east coast
Wednesday night to take on Seabreeze High of Daytona.

The marching Yellow Jacket band and the Junior High band put on a fine pre-game and
half time show to
the delight of 2,000 fans on hand and the presentation of a flag pole by the Dads Club
and a flag by
Byron Herlong was an inspiring site. Byron Herlong acted on behalf of this brother
Congressman A. Syd
Herlong, Jr. in presenting the high school with a flag that once flew over the nation's
capital.
